2025 Changes

Over the past week, we have received several questions concerning the IRP requirements and the new on-call language for extra hours. The information below is intended to bring some clarity to those issues.

  1. IRP Employment Requirements v. IRP Requirements for IP Eligibility
  • To meet the base requirements to continue as an IRP nurse at OSU, you only have to schedule yourself 16 hours per 4-week schedule. There were no changes to the IRP requirements in Appendix D of the old contract, if you need more information related to IRP requirements and benefits.
  • To qualify for incentive pay, you must schedule yourself 32 hours in a 4-week schedule. If shifts are canceled by OSU, they are still counted toward the eligibility requirement. You are not required to pick up all 32 hours during schedule creation.
  1. Extra Hours/Incentive Pay and On Call Obligations
  • The new on-call requirements for some extra hours and incentive shifts only apply to extra hours and incentive shifts that are picked up to work. This language does not affect regular on-call requirements or picking up on-call shifts in procedural areas.
  • If you pick up a shift or blocks of shifts that total less than 8 hours, and OSU cancels the beginning of your shift, the entire shift is canceled.
  • If you pick up a shift or block of shifts totaling 8 hours, but less than 12 hours, and OSU cancels the beginning of your shift, you have the option to choose to remain on call or to have the entire shift canceled.
  • If you pick up a shift or block of shifts totaling 12 hours or more, management has the option whether to put you on call for the remainder of the extra hours. You will be paid for all hours on call, even if the last part of your shift is ultimately canceled.
  • The on-call requirements for extra hours are not equivalent to the on-call requirements for procedural units. The needs are assessed at the same intervals that staffing is assessed, i.e. most commonly 7-11, 11-3, and 3-7, though we understand that there are some variations to this. If you are canceled and put on call from 7-11, OSU cannot call you at 8:00 and tell you to be in the hospital within 90 minutes. You would be called by 9:30 to let you know whether you are needed at 11:00.
  • If you come into work and are canceled, you are not on call and have no obligation to return to the hospital if they need staff for the last 4-hour block.

If you have any further questions about IRP requirements or extra hours/on call requirements, please reach out to your Board member or Caroline Miller at (614)301-3441.
